The 4th Olympic Academic Experience is a program coordinated by Dr. Bonnie Tiell, National Faculty for the United States Sports Academy and Professor of Sports Management at Tiffin University and 2x Olympian, Dr. Francis Dove-Edwin, President of the Sierra Leone Olympians Association. In collaboration with the World Olympian Association, the program is highlighted by a humanitarian project for underprivileged youth in the host city. On August 9th, the contingency, former Olympians, and 31 youth (commemorating the XXXI Olympic Games) from some of the most impoverished areas of Brazil will meet for a day of Olympic style sport competition, trivia contests, inspirational addresses from Olympians, a dinner gala, and a gold medal ceremony. The contingency is also collecting research on health and security issues impacting the Rio Olympics which will be presented during the 8th annual International Sports Business Symposium at Rio de Janeiro State University on August 16.
The Olympic Academic Experience includes round trip air travel to Brazil, accommodations WALKING DISTANCE to the Olympic Reunion Center and to Leblon Beach (Post 11), limited ground transportation, education sessions, several tours and several meals. Several participants are earning course credit for service and projects.
The contingency will arrive one or several days prior to the Opening Ceremonies for an excursion involving several Olympic events (free cycling and Torch Relay activities), volunteer service, and engagement in educational and cultural programs. Dr. Dove Edwin has assured that participants will be credentialed and schedule to work several shifts as hosts / hostesses at the Olympic Reunion Center (OCR) located at Clube de Regatas do Flemengo on Rio's south side in the shadow of the Christ the Redeemer statue on the shores of Lagoa Rodrigo de Frietas (less than 3 miles from Copacabana Beach!). Presented by Ernst & Young and CR Flemengo, home of one of Brazil's national futbol teams, the reunion center will be a hub for the contingency throughout the Games. Students may also volunteer at the African Village which features a public restaurant, daily entertainment, and a 60 seat flight simulator.
The Olympic Academic Experience has also taken place in Athens, Greece (2004); Beijing, China (2008); and London, England (2012). For more information, contact Dr. Bonnie Tiell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
